The Delphian School Exposes Students to the World of BusinessReleased on = July 1, 2005, 3:30 pm Press Release Author = The Delphian School Industry = Education Press Release Summary = Students from The Delphian School visit businesses in Chicago, Boston and New York, learning how they operate and how they are successful. Press Release Body = In March, students from The Delphian School went on a ten-day field trip to Chicago, Boston and New York, designed to allow the students to observe the business world of today and learn what professionals predict for the business world of tomorrow. Many of the students said it gave them an entirely new perspective on the impact business will have on their future lives, as well as vital data to guide their career and life decisions. In Chicago,
they visited the Leo Burnett Advertising Agency, hosted by Delphian
School parent Cheryl Berman, Chairman Leo Burnett North America
and Chief Creative Officer Leo Burnett USA. Students met a team
that had just completed a successful TV campaign for a client. The
team explained how they developed their ideas based on the client’s
criteria, created storyboards, met with animators and editors, and Students visited the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, hosted by a senior security official who stood with the students in the balcony overlooking the trading pits and explained the activity below. While in Chicago, students also visited Delphian School parent Scott Jacobs at Post Effects Studios, where students learned about audio and visual productions. In Boston, the students were hosted by Delphian School parents Steve and Cheryl Jonas. For two days, Steve Jonas, a top Fidelity Investments executive, opened the doors of Fidelity to the students. In New York,
students went into the New York Stock Exchange, and in small groups
traders led them onto the active trading floor of the stock exchange.
During their tour, there was a big commotion because of the news
that two companies were merging, and the students saw how the latest
news was affecting the prices of the stocks. One student said, “Even
though I had read about stock trading, I got a much better While in New
York, students also visited a wide range of other businesses. They
visited Hinton Battle, a dancer, singer, choreographer and producer,
at his Theatre Laboratory, spent time on the floor of the Cotton
Exchange and visited Chris Isham, Chief Investigative Reporter for
ABC News. Delphian School parent Raven Kane arranged for the students
to meet with a Broadway producer and the lead actor and Students attended ABC’s Good Morning America program as VIP guests. Host Charlie Gibson invited the students to talk with him after the show. The students learned about his work, life and philosophy. Gibson invited the students to stay to watch as a breaking news story was put on the air live. They watched him and co-anchor Kate Snow write the story and re-work their opening introductions and news stories. Gibson later gave them a personal tour of the control room. The Delphian School students also visited a private investment bank, a high tech venture capital company, attended Broadway shows and ate in the Delegate’s Dining Room at the United Nations. “This trip was just one great visit after another,” said a Delphian School student. “Each one was educational and interesting. It has made me look at my education and what I want to do with my life.” The Delphian School is an independent, co-educational day and boarding school offering college preparatory, English-as-a-Second-Language and summer programs for elementary through high school students.
