Press Release Summary: Children\'s book publishing company provides quiz and
activities to honor sea turtle holiday

 Press Release Body: Mt. Pleasant, S.C. (June 16, 2008) - June 16

marks the worldwide celebration of Sea Turtle

Day- a holiday dedicated to honoring sea turtle

 protection efforts and sea turtle

conservationists. Sea Turtle Day occurs on June

16 to commemorate Archie Carr, turtle scientist

extraordinaire, on his birthday. Carr, who died

in 1987, is known to turtle scientists as "the

father of sea turtle research." Carr spent his

entire life's work collaborating with leading

 sea turtle biologists to

spread awareness of the dangers that sea turtles

 continue to face.

While sea turtles are constantly in danger of

being eaten by large fish, actions committed by

humans are among the most fatal to this species.

Humans continuously run turtles out of their

own habitat (ocean beaches) by building seawalls

which can block mother turtles from their

nesting areas. Pollution and the disposal of

trash in the ocean also are very damaging to sea

turtles. Seaweed traps pollution and toxic waste

which can cause turtles to become very sick.

Sea turtles often confuse jellyfish with plastic

bags left in the ocean, and this mistake is

often a fatal one. It is extremely important to

not treat the ocean as a giant trashcan- for the

sake of the creatures who call the ocean home.
